Thursday, Part II

Very briefly, as I have to head off to breakfast and begin the day:

The movie was wonderful. A love story attempting to tell the whole story of the conflict, based on a true story. Turkish Cypriot man loves Greek Cypriot woman. They suffer for their love... Presented by the director with a follow-up conversation.

Following the movie was the first academic lecture. Adam began by laying out when our commitments are highly personal and particular and when they are global, universal. This distinction will become very important as we consider the problem of remaining devoted to our particular religious / ethnic communities and practices while also remaining concerned with the rights of others who are not in our group.

The formal day ended with a poetry exercise to help us begin to process what we saw and learned during the day.

It was now 8:45 pm. The air outside had cooled enough that it was time to board the bus to go downtown to a restaurant that had set up two large tables outside for us. I skipped the pork and the beef and the chicken in their several varieties, but enjoyed the salads, potatoes, t'hina, Greek yogurt, and local version of falafel.

And so ended the day. Today, Friday, will be a big day - will end w/ a tour of the northern half of Nicosia. Have passport in hand. More later.
